The Jesse Tree window

One of the oldest windows in Chartres, placed above the Royal Portal, from about 1150. It depicts Jesss reclining at the base of the window, with a rod coming from his groin. From the rod come branches, in which sit 4 kings of Judah, Mary, and Jesus. Jesus is surrounded by 7 doves, which could symbolize 7 gifts of the Holy Spirit. In the border are 14 Old Testament prophets who foretold that Christ would come from the house and line of David (Isaiah 11:1).
